Step 1: Start By Examining Your Gold For Hallmarks
One of the simplest ways to tell if your gold jewelry is real is to look for hallmarks.
A hallmark is a small symbol stamped onto the gold to verify its authenticity. The hallmark can tell you the type and amount of gold. The most common hallmarks being 375 (indicating 9 karat gold), 750 (indicating 18 karat gold) and 916 (indicating 22 karat gold).
If you are able to find a hallmark on your gold, it is most likely genuine. That being said, keep an eye out for additional stamps as this could mean the item is plated or filled!
Step 2: Check The Stamp If It’s Gold Plating Or Filling
Another way to determine if your gold is fake or not is to look for stamps that indicate gold plating or filling.
These stamps include GF (gold filled), GP (gold plated), and RG (Rolled Gold). Gold-plated jewelry has a thin layer of gold on the surface, while gold-filled jewelry has a thicker layer of gold bonded to the surface.
If your gold jewellery has any of these stamps, it is not solid gold.
Step 3: Use Magnet Testing
Worn off hallmarks or none at all? Don’t stress! This can occur due to regular wear and tear or exposure to harsh chemicals. If you’re unsure about the purity of your gold jewellery and can’t validate with a stamp, then try a simple magnet test!
Genuine gold is not magnetic, so if your gold jewellery is attracted to a magnet, there’s a good chance it may have other metals mixed in with it.

The first is an acid test. This commonly used method for testing gold involves making a small scratch to the item being tested and adding a drop of nitric acid to the scratch. If the item is real gold, it will not be affected by the acid, if the item is not real gold, the colour will disappear completely.
The second test is a white vinegar method, one that can easily be done at home! Simply place your item in a bowl of white vinegar and leave for 15 minutes. If the item is pure gold it will not tarnish or discolour (turns green), if it is not real gold, it will.
Finally, the float test! Fill a container with water and drop your gold jewellery inside. If the item is real gold, it will sink to the bottom due to its high density. If it is not real, it will float or remain suspended in the water.
