Adopting A Thrifty Life With These Money Saving Tips!
Most people would agree we could all be better with our spending. Maybe you have an online shopping addiction, go out for dinner too many times a week…whatever it is – finding the balance of smart spending while enjoying life is a fine act. With money stressors being all to evident in the modern world many people are choosing to adopt a thrifty life.
So What Is Living Thrifty?
Living thrifty is making a conscious decision to spend less. Also referred to as frugal living; this life approach is centered around acting intentional with your spending. Unfortunately, living frugally is often associated with negative connotations, but this is far from the reality. Thrifty life can mean very different things to different people. For some, it is a complete change in lifestyle. For others, it’s adopting practices and saving money tips into everyday life.
The rise in a more frugal lifestyle has increased dramatically since the start of the pandemic; where you could say it was inevitable we had to cut back on spending habits. Coming out of a lockdown world, many people re-evaluated their pre-covid lifestyles and are now maintaining more money conscious habits.
How Can I Start Living A More Frugal Life?
The choice to be more frugal should be gradual. This can allow you to determine what areas of your life you can make adjustments and maintain these changes. If you choose to completely radicalise your life with a frugal lifestyle you may have a difficult time staying on this path long term.
To get you started on thrifting your life we’ve put together a few tips and tricks!
Without having to radically change consumption habits there are ways to make subtle changes to your lifestyle – trust me you’ll notice the difference!

Meal Prep For The Week Ahead
The magic of meal prepping is real! Especially when making that choice to live your best thrifty life. Making time on a Sunday evening to bulk cook a few dishes can not only save you time but help you avoid spending money buying your lunches. For those of you who hate the thought of eating the same meal 3 days in a row (we see you!) there are ways you can meal prep so meals are still interesting!
Use similar ingredients but add different spices and flavours to create two different dishes that can be cooked at the same time. If you aren’t one for bulk cooking and would rather do the day before – you can easily save time by prewashing, cutting, marinating and portioning meals and vegetables to use later.

Cut The Coffee!
We’re sorry to say it, but it’ll save you in the long run. Whilst there are a lot of articles arguing before and against the daily coffee debacle, it is less about what the value of a coffee is worth and more so about spending habits. If you had a good coffee machine at home would you buy a coffee out? What about if you had a Frank Green coffee thermos so your coffee stayed warm so you could take it with you to work?
For those of you who would argue you don’t have enough time in the morning or drink a few coffees a day – the reality is that if you do want to practice frugal living there are ways around this conundrum which allow you to still enjoy your coffee fix. If you really, truly can’t live without buying your coffee for the ultimate happiness it brings, then make small steps. Start by preparing coffee from home 3 times a week and buying it when you’re out twice a week are all conscious efforts to lessen the burden on your bank account.

Avoid Impulsive Spends
If you’re a self professed shopaholic then this one is for you! Maybe you can’t stay away from Kmart, or have a fashion addiction that will not be stopped. Often than not you may not even realise how much your spending! Most impulsive shopping is it creates a positive emotional value and helps us feel better.
In an effort to adopt more thrifty life choices, a few ways to subdue that impulsion to spend are firstly, avoid the shops! If you flock to Westfield on your weekend try and instead go for a hike, a walk, to the beach…get out of the centres! For big purchases you just need, write them down and wait for the right time to buy – after you’ve been paid, when they’re on sale or once you’ve saved enough to splurge. Everything in moderation!

Start Sifting Through The Stuff
This is a big one. Sorting through old, unwanted stuff in your life is one of the best ways to not only physically declutter your home but declutter your mind too. Too much stuff creates more stress and anxiety as it comes with the responsibility to maintain and upkeep what you possess. The best part about a clean out is you can also make cash on the side doing so!
The number one focus when it comes to cleaning up your life is to focus on functionality. No, this does not mean you have to get rid of everything that offers no functional purpose. There is a lot of useless stuff that makes us happy! But going in with a functional mindset means you can get rid of clutter that you don’t find use or happiness for.
